2015 Be AMYazing! Triathlon

This year marked the fifth annual Be AMYazing Reston Youth Triathlon,  held in May. This event was started by Amy Boyle’s friends Kacey Hirshfeld, Olivia Wolfe, and Hannah Becker, to honor and remember Amy and to raise money and awareness of Diffuse Intrinsic Pontine Gliomas (DIPG). To participate in the event is to witness an outpouring of love and support from the community not only for the participants, but also for Amy, her family, and her story. The event has surpassed all expectations by raising a significant amount of money every year, which helps fund the research of pediatric brain tumors. Additionally, the memory of Amy, acting as the driving force behind the race, brings together a group of kids to have fun, be active, and, most important, take part in a greater good by fighting to find a cure for all kids who undergo the terrible fate of a brain tumor. The triathlon is also heavily influenced by its student chairs who embody Amy’s determination and perseverance to create a fun and lasting event in the Reston community.

The 2015 triathlon raised $16,000 for the Childhood Brain Tumor Foundation (CBTF), bringing the total since 2011 to $63,000.   This year CBTF is funding a DIPG grant in memory of Amy. A summary of the funded study will be included in our fall 2015 newsletter.
