Monday, September 15, 2008 marked the 10th anniversary of the annual Kyle’s Heroes Golf Tournament, held at Jumping Brook Country Club in Neptune, NJ. Each and every September for 10 years the number of golfers increases. The wonderful volunteers who organize the event are members of the Kyle’s Heroes family, some by blood, some by choice and others by extension. As always, many businesses and corporations generously donated as sponsors or with raffle prizes. The outing is always great fun and everyone enjoys talking of the good times from past events, the event of the day, and look forward to the next event.
This year, the Killeen family paid special tribute to a dear friend’s son, Grayson Katab. Grayson was diagnosed with an atypical teratoid rhabdoid tumor in July 2007. Grayson faced his battle with aggressive treatments like a warrior with unrelenting courage. He lost his battle on August 5, 2008 at 2 ½ years old after he and his family scoured and traveled the world for treatments. To date, there are no known effective treatments for ATRT. Herein lies an example of why the organizers and supporters of Kyle’s Heroes, the Childhood Brain Tumor Foundation, likeminded organizations, and the medical community are dedicated to raising funds for pediatric brain tumor research.
Peg and Patty reminded the supporters that Kyle is the exception, not the rule. They were pleased to announce that Kyle would soon be celebrating his 25th birthday. Kyle is a remarkable young man who is always kind and has a deep understanding for the brain tumor cause. They further stated that for children like Grayson they will continue to donate 100% of the proceeds from Kyle’s Heroes to the Childhood Brain Tumor Foundation.
